There are many different types of web hosting that is available to consumers. We will quickly go over Shared, VPS and Dedicated web hosting to give you a taste of what is available. Of course each of these has their pros and cons and you will need to weigh these against your needs to choose the best type of web hosting for you.
Shared web hosting is the most common type of web hosting available. In a shared web hosting set up, many different web sites are using a single server with other customers of the web host. Usually the larger number of customers using a single server, the lower the cost is for the web hosting. You have no control over the web server, but you can control your web site using a control panel that is provided by the web host.
The main advantage to using shared web hosting is the price. Because there are multiple web sites on a single server, the owners of each of these sites will pay a small portion of the cost needed by the company to run the server and make a profit. Of course a disadvantage of this is the performance since there are many different web sites being hosted at the same time. If your web site requires a large amount of processing or memory, sharing a web server with other web sites might not be the best solution for you.
VPS web hosting, which stands for virtual private server, will provide the features of a dedicated server for multiple web sites using virtual computers. What this means is that even though you are still sharing storage space, processor time and memory with other clients of the web host, the resources are allocated so that you cannot tell. This is because each user of the web server is allowed a certain percent of the resources.
The advantage to a VPS web host is that you have complete control of your web host virtual computer. Your web site will also be more reliable because the resources that you are allocated will always be available for your web site and other customers cannot take any of those resources away from your web site. A VPS will cost more than shared hosting, but will not be nearly as expensive as dedicated hosting.
Finally, we arrive on dedicated web hosting. This type of web hosting is much more costly than shared or VPS, but it does have its advantages over them. A dedicated web host allows you to lease the actual server and therefore you are given total control of that computer and its resources. This means that you can run one of your web sites on that server, or many different web sites on that server, but it is entirely up to you.
The advantage to a dedicated server is the access that you have to that server. Since you have complete control over the server, you can use applications and scripts on the web hosting server without affecting other customers of the web hosting company. This also means that other customer’s applications are not affecting you in any way. These advantages may not always outweigh the costs of this type of web hosting unless you have a very large web site with lots of traffic.
